Shelley Taylor Smith

Posted by GC on Sunday, November 29, 2009, In : Legends
This article courtesy of Swimsmooth .com I thought was very interesting and well worth a read......

On January 17, 1995, I hit the wall 8hrs into my solo swim from Sydney to Wollongong (I know what you’re thinking... what were you thinking Shelley?) Little did I know that I had 4hrs 30mins of swimming remaining!

The water had dropped from 21C to 12C. Imagine if you can swimming at the front of the shark proof cage with the ocean water dumping on top of my head every 5 seconds much like a buck...

Quote for the Day

Posted by GC on Thursday, November 19, 2009, In : Quotes
"Nothing tastes better than skinny feels."

A potentially controversial sentence depending on its context from Kate Moss. For me personally it doesnt ring true as there are certainly some things that I have an acquired taste for which wont go away and nor would I want them to !

Clearwater 70.3

Posted by GC on Saturday, November 14, 2009, In : Food for thought
Today is the World 70.3 Championships the old money Half Ironman Distance equivalent. The clasic meeting distance for the Ironman athletes and the Olympic Distance athletes (non drafting)along with the Middle Distance specialists. It is a true World Championships just as Hawaii Ironman and the WCS for Olympic Distance drafting.
They are all worthy components of a great sport Triathlon along with some other derivatives such as Xterra. For other disciplines perhaps there are question marks over ...

Military message

This picture tells the story and saves on many words. Can we not give our forces what they need to do their job properly. Having watched Andrew Marrs series again last night it appears a common theme through history an in ability of our Generals (leaders !) to listen to those at the coal face.

Ryan Hall

A piece by Ryan Hall giving a postscript to his New York Marathon last weekend. In essence it wasnt the race he was looking or hoping for yet he gives a strong account tof the race and finishes with astrong last sentence.....

I woke up at 5 am yesterday morning without an alarm, wide-eyed and full of optimism. It felt almost wrong that the day was finally here. I had been looking forward to this day since I first watched the 2006 ING New York City marathon from the lead vehicle. From that...

Decline of Performance in British Distance Mens Running

Posted by GC on Friday, November 6, 2009, In : Education
Below is an extensive list of British 10km performances from the early 1970s through to today. There maybe the odd run missing (Mo Farah etc). I have highlighted in RED those runs that were done this century ie since 2000. In BLUE are those runners from th 1990s. In GREEN those from the 1980s and in ORANGE those from the 1970s.  Interestingly one of the runners I hadnt heard of Adrian Royle from the early 80s who ran 27.47. Today his name would be etched in our minds as one of our top Distanc...
