The trick is not how much pain you feel - but how much joy you feel. Any idiot can feel pain. Life is full of excuses to feel pain, excuses not to live, excuses, excuses, excuses.

I can always remember my nan saying on a regular basis
"If a jobs worth doing its worth doing properly".
I have heard it many times since and realise now the meaning and simplicity of the words. Ive no idea who originally said this. Im pretty sure it wasnt my nan, but Ill give her the credit. Why ? Because I can. Continue reading ...

A foursome of senior golfers hit the course with waning enthusiasm for the sport. "These hills are getting steeper as the years go by," one complained. "These fairways seem to be getting longer too," wheezed a second. "And somehow, the sand traps seem to be bigger than I remember 'em too," said the third. Hearing just about enough from his buddies, the oldest, and the wisest of the foursome at 87-years-old, piped up and said, "Oh my friends, just be thankful we're still on THIS side of the grass!" The law of averages suggests that some thursday evenings will not have the heavens opening along the roads of the Moira loop. I guess the fact that the session is key workout at an interesting and testing venue makes the weather less noticable but an evening of staying dry must be on the cards. It brings to an end another week of training that has passed with varying degrees of success. Much in the pool working on efficiency of stroke and application of power through the propulsive phase effe... Continue reading ...

The challenge of balance in our lives comes in many forms.
Balance is an important thread that exists all the way through our lives. Time and time again our balance is challenged and we are tested to realign ourselves again. From our first steps as an infant we learn to stand and balance so taking our first faltering steps. This continues both mentally and physiically for the rest of our lives. As it is when we first learn to walk, all of us are different in the length of time it takes us an...

Tracey Harris is alive and kicking and not actually far away in Brighton. Caught up with him last weekend at a dinner party (a rare occurrence for me). His dress attire wasnt quite so colourful as the picture above and he now sports a billiard ball head but the gas is still there for a good yarn. Infact my ears certainly did a whole lot more work than my mouth. Continue reading ...

As an athlete or coach we should be continually looking to raise the bar. Identifying those things we need to address allow us to raise the bar and by doing them consistantly enables us to approach the bar with confidence next time. The lack of addressing the right areas and lack of consistancy are what ultimately lead to the hesitation on approaching the bar. Setting the bar correctly and having prepared consistantly will give you the confidence to approach the bar in full flow and at best ... Continue reading ...

What is meant by "Doing a Giles" a phrase known and understood by some whilst to others it will possibly have no meaning at all. In essence historically the phrase is synonomus with more commonly known phrases such as taking the mickey, sailing close to the wind, taking liberties, not showing respect and doing as they feel. They are all in turn linked with behaviour towards 1. the squad and its members and 2. the coach(es). So basically behaviour that undermines the well being of the squad by ... Continue reading ...

Its simple its free and it works. Stretching costs nothing gives handsome returns and can be made as personal as the music on your i pod. Stretching should be an integral part of the athletes training and not something that is occasionally or begrudgingly added. The simplicity of stretching is often its undoing in this age where for something to have value it has to cost or involve others (a group stretch or a mobile at hand in case that life changing/saving call or text comes through). Payi...

A doctor who shall remain nameless but close links with the squad made an audio appearance on a recording of Who Wants to be a Millionaire as a "Phone a friend". When given the question and the four posible answers he was unsure of the correct one. Not wishing to give no answer at all he had a guess at one of the answers and followed this by notifying the contestant he was only 20% sure. Chris Tarrant pointed out that the contestant had already got a 25% chance of guessing the right answer be... Continue reading ...

Keep It Simple: Run To Win! "I run around 200ks a week for 8 weeks when preparing for a marathon. For me all the weeks workouts are important. The main thing is to feel like you can do more each session. Dont kill yourself in training, its better to undertrain than to over do it. The difference between African and the western runners I think is on race day. Africans will go out to win while the others will run with lack of self belief. I think US runners have all the advantages: coaching,medic... Continue reading ...

No events this past week so training focussed across all groups this past week. It was a strong week in the pool for those who were able to hit the sessions with bigger set on Tuiesday. A couple of good key runs on Thursday at Moira loop with the Fartlek and on Sunday on the Forest Tempo. Still some learning to do on the idea of tempo sessions and where the value of the type of session comes from. The importance of this is that a valuable training session becomes an enemy very quickly if appr... Continue reading ...

Make a wish, and place it in your heart. Anything you want, and everything you want. You never know when the next miracle will come true, the next wish will come true. But if you believe its right around the corner, and you open your heart to the possibility of it, to certainty of it. You just might get the thing you are wishing for. The world is full of magic, you just have to believe in it.

How often do you start reflection and preparation on training and performance with what you have done and what you can do as opposed to what you havent done or cant do ? Try it for a week and see how you get on purposely trying to adjust your thought process. On a squad level make a point of picking someone up in conversation if they start any form of reflection the wrong way. When all is smooth then the exercise is more straightforward yet for some still challenging whilst when all is not so ... Continue reading ...

Watching the Manchester World Cup at the weekend it was interesting to see the continued success of the British Cycling programme. With great momentum from Beijing they face a whole new range of challenges over the next four years leading to London. There are many dimensions to cycling with probably the closest linked to Triathlon being the road riders who also ride track or vica verca. It is the apparent smoothness of how they appear to work both independantly with their professional teams a... Continue reading ...

A busy week with a strong couple of key runs on Thursday in the tropical climes of Eastbourne ! Then Sunday on an outing on the Fire Trail. Decent week in the pool culminating with birthday celebrations in the pool. Its the weekly consistancy of sessions now that are the deposits in the bank that are there for withdrawals once the season comes around. Only 51/2 weeks until Lanzarote camp ! Three of these species, yellowfin, skipjack and bigeye, are often referred to as the "tropical tunas", for they range throughout the tropical and sub-tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Albacore are more often found in sub-tropical to temperate waters, while bluefin can be found on both sides of the North Atlantic as far north as Greenland and northern Norway.
In addition to these tuna species, there are a few species of billfish that are often caught in the same fish...
